Franc Rode: A Slovenian Cardinal and Prefect

Early Life and Education

Born on September 23, 1934, in Rodica near Ljubljana, Slovenia, Franc Rode's family sought refuge in Austria in 1945 before settling in Argentina in 1948. In 1952, he entered the Congregation of the Mission (Lazarists) in Buenos Aires and pursued his education at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and the Catholic Institute in Paris, where he obtained his doctorate in theology in 1968.

Priesthood and Return to Yugoslavia

Ordained a priest on June 29, 1960, Rode returned to Yugoslavia in 1965 upon the request of his congregation's superior. From 1965 to 1978, he held various roles within his congregation, including vice-pastor, director of studies, provincial superior, and professor of fundamental theology and missiology at the Theological Faculty of Ljubljana.

Vatican Service

In 1978, Rode became an advisor to the Secretariat for Non-Believers, joining the dicastery full-time in 1981. From 1982 to 1993, he served as undersecretary of the Council, helping to organize important dialogue sessions with European Marxists. In 1993, Pope John Paul II merged the Pontifical Council for Culture with the Pontifical Council for Non-Believers and appointed Rode as secretary of the newly formed Pontifical Council for Culture.

Archbishop of Ljubljana

On March 5, 1997, Rode was appointed Archbishop of Ljubljana and consecrated on April 6, 1997. During his tenure, he successfully negotiated a new Concordat that received final approval in 2004.

Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life

On February 11, 2004, Rode was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. On March 24, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI elevated Rode to Cardinal at his first consistory, making him a Cardinal Deacon with the deaconry of San Francesco Saverio alla Garbatella.

Legacy

As the first Slovenian Cardinal after Slovenia's independence in 1991, Franc Rode has made significant contributions to the Catholic Church in his country and beyond. His work in promoting dialogue with non-believers and his leadership in overseeing religious institutes have left a lasting impact on the global Church.
