From Escape Room Enthusiasts to Game Creators
Escape Room ObsessionAmerican designer, puzzle creator, and co-founder of Wild Optimists, Ari Rubenstein, became enamored with escape rooms upon their rise. However, the unpleasant locations of these quests prompted her and her partner Julianna Patel to host one in a home setting. With no products available to transform their evening into a quest, they embarked on their own path.
Birth of a Company
Recognizing the demand, Rubenstein and Patel founded Wild Optimists, where their passion for escape rooms and puzzles soared. Their first game, "Escape Room In A Box: The Werewolf Experiment," designed for home play, caught the attention of Mattel Games, who distributed it globally.
Innovation and Versatility
Wild Optimists expanded beyond board games, offering consulting services for live escape rooms and events. They orchestrated an interactive stream for DrLupo, a prominent Twitch streamer. The visual puzzles engaged an audience of hundreds of thousands, igniting a buzz, especially during a finale designed to dazzle gamers.
Rubenstein and Patel created immersive experiences for theme parks, live events, and tabletop games. Conventions like Up The Game and the International Escape Room Convention fueled their business growth.
Collaborative Workflow
Their daily routine begins with morning video calls to delegate responsibilities. While Julianna focuses on logistics, Ari handles creative aspects, with narrative and design decisions made collectively. The day is punctuated by family time before resuming work in the evenings. Weekly brainstorming sessions, often held over coffee and pastries, spark new ideas.
Rigorous Testing
Game development involves rigorous testing. Rubenstein trials games with diverse groups before launching them. This "trial by fire" ensures that the final product meets exacting standards.
Global Success of Escape Room in a Box
"Escape Room In A Box: The Werewolf Experiment," where players solve puzzles to avert lycanthropy, pioneered home escape room experiences. The series has expanded, incorporating a modern-day take on the "Murder Mystery Party Game," which won "Game of the Year" at the Mattel Inventor Awards.
During the pandemic, Wild Optimists released "Vampire.pizza," a novel twist in the Escape Room in a Box series. The game unfolds with a pizza order, leading players to uncover a vampire revolution. Unique challenges test players' worthiness to join the cause.
Industry Recognition
"Wild Optimists is endlessly inventive and delightfully creative. They brought immersive home gaming to the forefront long before most people even knew what an escape room was," said Noah Nelson, creator of the No Proscenium newsletter on immersive events in Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco.
