Arkady Gornfeld: A Distinguished Literary Critic

Early Life and Education

Arkady Georgievich Gornfeld, a renowned literary critic, was born in 1867. He graduated from Kharkov University's law faculty, but simultaneously studied literary theory under Oleksandr Potebni's tutelage in the philological faculty. Subsequently, he pursued further studies in literary creation in Berlin under Moritz Lazarus and Ludwig Geiger.

Journalistic Career

Gornfeld began his journalistic career at "Russkoe Bogatstvo," where he eventually became an editorial board member. His notable articles include "A Forgotten Writer" (1895), "Critique and Lyric" (1897), and "The Torments of Language" (1899). He also contributed to other publications, such as "Zhurnal dlya Vsekh," "Voskhod," and "Syn Otechestva."

Encyclopedic Contributions

Gornfeld authored numerous articles for Brockhaus-Efron's "Encyclopedic Dictionary," spanning topics from foreign and Russian writers to literary theory. He penned comprehensive entries on "Poetry" and "Poetics."

Collected Works

His writings were included in anthologies dedicated to Schiller, Shakespeare, and Pushkin. He also contributed to "Mir" Society's "History of Russian Literature," as well as to "Zarnitsy" and Literary Fund collections.

Published Books

Gornfeld published several standalone works, including "The Torments of Language" (1906), "Books and People" (1908), "In the West" (1910), and "On the Interpretation of Literary Works" (1912). Notably, he edited Sergei Aksakov's collected works in 1909.

Critical Approach

As a prominent member of "Russkoe Bogatstvo," Gornfeld avoided polemical criticism. His temperament leaned towards analytical scholarship. His literary interests focused on aesthetics, exploring the science of the subject rather than dictating creative norms.

Aesthetic Focus

Gornfeld delved into "the torments of language," analyzing the linguistic intricacies of expressing complex thoughts and emotions. By examining the external manifestations of literary expression, he sought to uncover the underlying psychological and sociological foundations of art.
