Arleen Whelan was born on September 1, 1916, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her father owned a small electrical shop. After moving to California, Whelan's striking features and luxurious auburn hair caught the eye of Hollywood artist Azadia Newman, who painted her portrait.

Hollywood Debut

While working as a manicurist on Hollywood Boulevard, Whelan was spotted by director H. Bruce Humberstone, who recommended her to Darryl F. Zanuck. In May 1937, she signed a five-year movie contract and was rumored to be considered for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind."

Acting Career and Relationships

Throughout her career, Whelan appeared in numerous films and television shows, including "Submarine Patrol" and "Jesse James." She was involved in several high-profile relationships, including with British actor Richard Greene and director Alexander D'Arcy, whom she married in 1940.

Personal Life and Marriages

Whelan's first two marriages ended in divorce. She married executive Hugh Owen in 1943, but they separated in 1947. In 1960, she married Dr. Warren O. Cagney, but they divorced after 15 months.

Legacy and Later Years

Whelan's last years were spent in Laguna Niguel, California. In the late 1980s, Alexander D'Arcy attempted to reconnect but Whelan abruptly ended the call.
