Armand Vallin Feigenbaum: American Quality Control Expert and Businessman

Armand Vallin Feigenbaum, born in 1922, is an American expert in the field of quality control and a successful businessman. He introduced the concept of Total Quality Control, later known as Total Quality Management or TQM.

Early Life and Education

Feigenbaum studied and received his bachelor's degree in Schenectady, New York, where the prestigious Union College is located. He later pursued his master's degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), one of the world's most renowned educational institutions.

Professional Career

From 1958 to 1968, Armand V. Feigenbaum served as the head of the Department of Manufacturing Operations at General Electric. Currently, he holds the position of President and CEO of General Systems Company in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. General Systems Company is an engineering firm that designs and installs operational systems.

Contributions and Publications

Feigenbaum has authored several books on quality control and management, including "Quality control: principles, practice and administration; an industrial management tool for improving product quality and design and for reducing operating costs and losses" in 1945 and "The power of management innovation: 24 keys for sustaining and accelerating business growth and profitability" in 2009. He played a vital role in the establishment of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and served as its President from 1961 to 1963.

Recognition and Achievements

Throughout his more than 35-year career in quality control, Feigenbaum created and disseminated the principles of Total Quality Control, which have been adopted in the United States and worldwide. In November 2008, he received the prestigious 'Medal of Quality' from Russia, awarded by I.A. Ilyin, for his outstanding achievements in the field of quality. Feigenbaum is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a lifetime member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and a lifetime member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
