Biography of Arnaud Clement
Early Life and Tennis CareerArnaud Clement, a French professional tennis player, was born on December 17, 1977. He started playing tennis at the age of seven, with his older brother Bruno as his first partner. After completing college in 1995, Clement decided to focus on his sporting career. He played his first professional tournament matches in November 1996 at the "challenger" in Reunion Island. In July 1997, he reached his first final in the doubles category at a challenger tournament, and in November of the same year, he reached the final in the singles category. In the same year, he made it to the third round at Wimbledon.
ATP Tour Successes
In 1999, Clement reached his first ATP Tour final in Marseille, defeating Cedric Pioline, a player ranked in the top 20, in the semifinals. Throughout the season, he climbed from 103rd to 48th place in the rankings. In 2000, he won his first ATP tournaments in Casablanca (doubles) and Lyon (singles). He defeated several top 10 players during the season, including Andre Agassi twice, at the US Open and in Lyon. By the end of the season, Clement entered the top 20 in singles rankings. In January 2001, he reached the final of the Australian Open, where he was defeated by Agassi. In April, he achieved his highest ranking in singles, reaching the 10th position.
Cup Success and Doubles Achievements
In the 2001 Davis Cup, Clement played for the French team, winning four out of six matches and helping his team reach the final, where they emerged victorious against Australia. He also contributed to the team's journey to the final in the following year, although they were eventually defeated by Russia. In the semifinals against the United States, Clement triumphed over Andy Roddick. He also represented France in the World Team Cup in 2001 and 2002, with a positive record in both singles and doubles matches.
In 2004, Clement reached the finals of four doubles tournaments and won three of them with different partners. His success in doubles led to a rise in the rankings, from 141st to 30th. He participated in the Olympic Games in Athens in both singles and doubles categories. In 2006, Clement and his partner Mickaël Llodra won the Masters Series tournament in Paris and went on to win the Wimbledon tournament in 2007. They also reached the final of the Australian Open in 2008 and made it to the semifinals of the Olympics in Beijing.
Later Career and Retirement
After the 2008 Australian Open, Clement reached his career-high ranking of 8th in doubles. He continued to have success in doubles, reaching three more finals in 2009 and winning one title with Llodra. In January 2010, he reached the final of an ATP Tour singles event for the first time in over two years. Despite his achievements, Clement's victory over a top 10 player came in 2009 when he defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Lyon.
Arnaud Clement retired from professional tennis in 2012. Throughout his career, he had notable successes in both singles and doubles, representing France in various team competitions and winning prestigious titles such as Wimbledon and the Davis Cup.
