Biography of Arnold Lininsh

Arnold Lininsh was a Soviet and Latvian theater actor, director, and educator. He was born on November 11, 1930, in Riga, into a family with German roots. His mother repatriated to Germany in 1939, and he was raised by his foster parents. Lininsh graduated from the 5th Riga High School and the Theater Department of the Latvian State Conservatory named after J. Vitols in 1952. He also attended the Higher Directorial Courses of the State Institute of Theatrical Art in Moscow in 1965.

Theater Career

Since 1952, Lininsh worked as an actor at the A. Upitis State Drama Theater (National Theater) and became a popular variety performer. He later served as a director at the Daugavpils Music and Drama Theater (1959), an actor and director at the State Theater for Young Audiences of the Latvian SSR (1960-1964), a director at the Amateur Theater of the Riga Teacher's House (1965), an assistant director and director at the Latvian SSR State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater (1966-1970), and the chief director at the J. Rainis State Academic Art Theater (Dailas Theater) (1971-1987), where he oversaw the relocation of the theater to a new building in 1977. In 1987, he stepped down as the chief director but remained in the theater as a director.

Award and Contributions

Lininsh was awarded the State Prize of the Latvian SSR in 1976 for his productions of "The Last Barrier" by Andrejs Dripe, "Brand" by Henrik Ibsen, and "Ole Binkop" by Erwin Strittmatter. He also participated in productions at the Riga Operetta Theater, the Opera and Ballet Theater, the State Drama Theater, the Liepaja Drama Theater, and the Puppet and Youth Theaters.

As a guest director, Lininsh worked at the Shaulyay Drama Theater in Lithuania and the Vratsa Drama Theater in Bulgaria. He was also an invited actor at the New Riga Theater from 1994 to 1996. Additionally, he taught at the Latvian State Conservatory and led directing courses. He was also involved in teaching and directing actor studios at the Dailas Theater and the Latvian Academy of Culture.

Personal Life and Legacy

Lininsh appeared in films at the Riga Film Studio and conducted classes at the People's Studio of Film Actors. He was married to director and theater professional Aina Matisa. Lininsh passed away on September 12, 1998, in Riga and was buried at the Forest Cemetery. In 2001, a monument by sculptor O. Feldbergs was erected at his grave.
