Biography of Art Bergmann
Art Bergmann, a Canadian rock musician, guitarist, singer, and composer, was born on February 8, 1953, in Vancouver, British Columbia. He grew up in Surrey, where he would hum songs by The Beatles and pretend to play guitar with a broomstick.
Early Career
Bergmann began his music career in a band called the "Mount Lehman Grease Band" from Abbotsford, British Columbia. After the band disbanded, he formed his own group called the "Notorious Smorg Brothers," which featured various musicians.
The Young Canadians
Later on, Bergmann became the lead vocalist and songwriter for the Vancouver punk band known as the "Young Canadians" (formerly "The K-Tels"). Although the Young Canadians only released two independent EPs and one single, their song "Hawaii," co-written by Ross Carpenter, became a classic anthem of Canadian punk rock.
Solo Career
In the 1980s, Bergmann played with independent Vancouver bands "Poisoned" and "Los Popularos" before signing a solo contract with Duke Street Records in 1988. He released his debut solo album, "Crawl With Me," in the same year, produced by John Cale. Bergmann's second album, "Sexual Roulette" (1990), produced by Chris Wardman, achieved commercial success, leading him to sign with the major label Polygram Records. The hit single "Bound for Vegas" gained significant popularity. His third album, self-titled "Art Bergmann" (1991), produced two successful singles, "Faithlessly Yours" and "Message From Paul," which received extensive airplay.
Later Works
In 1995, Bergmann released "What Fresh Hell is This?" on Sony Records, earning him a Juno Award for "Best Alternative Rock Album." However, despite consistent sales, Sony did not renew his contract. "Design Flaw" (1998), produced by Peter J. Moore of Cowboy Junkies, was an independent release featuring reworked tracks from his first three albums and a cover of Graham Parson's "Sin City," with Bergmann on acoustic guitar and Chris Spedding on electric guitar. In 2000, Bergmann reissued his 1984 album "Vultura Freeway" and contributed a cover version of "Prisoners of Rock and Roll" to a Neil Young tribute compilation.
Art Bergmann's contributions to the Canadian punk and rock music scenes have solidified his position as a key figure in the country's music history. With his unique sound and songwriting abilities, he continues to inspire and influence musicians to this day.
