Artem Maximovich Kushkyan was born on April 14, 1956, in Yerevan, Armenia. He is an Armenian statesman and physician. He graduated from the Yerevan State Medical Institute in 1980, specializing in surgery. After completing his internship at Yerevan Emergency Hospital No. 2 from 1980 to 1981, he worked as an emergency physician at Ashtarak Central District Hospital from 1981 to 1984.
In 1984, Kushkyan became a resident in the thoracic surgery department at Yerevan Emergency Hospital No. 2. He furthered his education in endocrine surgery at the Moscow Institute of Endocrinology and Hormone Chemistry from 1985 to 1986. From 1986 to 1990, he served as the head of the endocrine surgery department at Erebuni Hospital.
In 1990, Kushkyan received additional training at the University of Southern California Medical Center. Upon his return, he became the chief physician at Erebuni Clinical Hospital from 1990 to 1991. Since 1991, he has been the CEO of the Erebuni Medical Center. He also underwent training at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Hospital in 1993, where he defended his doctoral dissertation on the correction of heart and immune system function during certain thyroid diseases. He holds a Doctor of Medical Sciences degree and is a professor.
From 1995 to 1999, Kushkyan served as a member of the parliament, where he was a member of the permanent committees on social issues, healthcare, and environmental protection. He has been an elected member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences since 1998 and an active member of the Academy of Surgical Sciences since 1999. In 2001, he became an active member of the XXI Union of Professionals of Armenian Surgery.
Since 2002, Kushkyan has been the CEO of the Nairi Medical Center. He was the head of the endocrine surgery department at the Institute of National Health of Armenia from 2003 to 2005. From 2005 to 2007, he served as the chairman of the medical commission of the Armenian Olympic Committee.
In June 2007, Kushkyan was appointed as the Minister of Health of Armenia, a position he holds to this day. He has made significant contributions to the field of medicine and has been recognized for his expertise in endocrine surgery.
