Alicia Moreau de Justo: A Pioneer of Feminism and Socialism
Alicia Moreau de Justo was an Argentine physician, politician, pacifist, and human rights activist who played a pivotal role in the feminist and socialist movements in Argentina during the early 20th century.
Early Life and Activism
Born on October 11, 1885, Alicia Moreau de Justo was the daughter of Arman Moreau, a journalist and politician. She became involved in activism from a young age, organizing conferences at the Fundación Luz and founding the Ateneo Popular with her father. In 1902, she co-founded the Feminist Socialist Center of Argentina and the Union of Working Women.
Medical and Socialist Career
In 1914, Moreau de Justo graduated from medical school and joined the Socialist Party a few years later. She married the party's founder, Juan Bautista Justo, and they had three children. She became a leading figure in the party, serving as editor-in-chief of the journal "Humanidad Nueva" and director of the publishing house "Nuestra Causa."
National Feminist Movement
In 1918, Moreau de Justo founded the National Feminist Union, leading campaigns for women's suffrage, labor rights, and the eight-hour workday. After her husband's death in 1928, she continued her political activism in women's and labor movements.
Political Leadership and Human Rights
Moreau de Justo was a vocal critic of the Peronist regime that came to power in the 1940s. She opposed its authoritarian rule and its suppression of political freedoms. In 1932, she drafted a bill for universal suffrage, which was not enacted until 1947. During the Spanish Civil War, she supported the Second Spanish Republic.
Later Years
In 1958, Moreau de Justo participated in the founding of the Socialist Party of Argentina and served as editor of the party newspaper "La Vanguardia" until 1960. She continued to work on issues related to human rights and social justice throughout her later years. In 1975, she co-founded the Permanent Assembly for Human Rights.
Moreau de Justo passed away on May 11, 1986, leaving behind a legacy of activism and leadership in the fight for women's rights, social justice, and human dignity.
