Early Life and Education
Born on September 12, 1838, in Gotha, Germany, Auwers received his education at the prestigious Göttingen and Königsberg universities. He developed a strong foundation in astronomical principles, laying the groundwork for his future achievements.
Career and Scientific Contributions
In 1866, Auwers joined the Gotha Observatory, where he embarked on his astronomical research. His primary focus was on astrometric studies, particularly the precise measurement of star positions and distances.
Auwers' most notable work was the publication of his revised catalog of 3000 Bradley stars in 1888. Known as the Auwers-Bradley Catalog, it served as a cornerstone for subsequent research on stellar motion until the advent of Lewis Boss's "Preliminary General Catalogue" in 1910.
In addition, Auwers investigated the gravitational influence of companion stars on Sirius and Procyon and determined the solar parallax using observations of minor planets and the 1874 and 1882 transits of Venus.
