Soproni Harcm was a renowned Hungarian astronomer born in Szombathely, Hungary. He pursued his education at the universities of Budapest and Berlin, laying the foundation for his distinguished career in astronomy.
Observational Work and Directorships
In 1929, Soproni joined the Konkoly Observatory in Budapest, where he conducted extensive observations of variable stars, particularly those of the RR Lyrae type. In 1943, he was appointed director of the observatory and continued to lead its scientific endeavors.
Contributions to Variable Star Research
Soproni's research primarily focused on investigating non-stationary stars. He made significant contributions to understanding the instability of periods and light curve shapes in variable stars. His discoveries revealed the connection between magnetic field variations and secondary changes in light curves.

Beyond variable star research, Soproni studied the spatial distribution of stars. He proposed theories and conducted observations to unravel the structure and dynamics of stellar systems.
Legacy and Impact
Soproni's dedication to astronomy extended beyond his research. He founded the "Information Bulletin on Variable Stars" for the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and served as its editor from 1961. In 1967, he became President of Commission 27 "Variable Stars" of the IAU.
