Arthur Cinader: Visionary Founder of J.Crew
Early Life and FamilyArthur Cinader, the founder of J.Crew, inherited a passion for business from his father, Mitchell. In 1947, Mitchell established Popular Club Plan, a successful women's clothing company. Arthur, known for his independent spirit and disdain for fashion norms, met his future wife while skiing in Switzerland.
The Birth of J.Crew
In the early 1980s, the Cinaders sold some of their assets to launch J.Crew, an upscale clothing retailer for young professionals. The family played an integral role in the venture: Arthur Jr. became an executive at the company, Maud became a J.Crew catalog photographer, and Abigail modeled.
Rapid Growth and Catalog Success
The J.Crew catalog business boomed in the 1980s, reaching $4 million in sales in its first year. However, a setback occurred when two top executives left to launch the competing catalog "Tweeds."
Expanding into Retail
In response to the competition, Arthur Cinader introduced "Collection," a line of high-priced career wear. When this line proved unsuccessful, J.Crew decided to venture into retail. Despite skepticism from direct marketing experts, the first J.Crew store opened in New York City in 1989, marking a new era for the brand.
The Rise of a Retail Empire
J.Crew stores quickly became known for their sophisticated design and authentic brand identity. The company's retail expansion proved highly successful, with only a few exceptions.
Influence of Arthur and Emily Cinader
Arthur Cinader and his daughter Emily were instrumental in J.Crew's success. Emily once remarked, "He and I work as a great team. We complement each other very well." However, they were also known for being demanding, which occasionally resulted in the departure of top management.
Sale and Legacy
In 1997, J.Crew was sold to Texas Pacific Group for $560 million. Arthur Cinader officially retired at age 70 but continued to consult for J.Crew. The brand he founded remains a successful and influential player in the fashion industry.
