Biography of Arthur Golden
Arthur Golden is an American Japanologist and author, best known for his best-selling novel Memoirs of a Geisha, published in 1997.
Early Life and Education
Arthur Golden was born into the prominent Ochs-Sulzberger family, the founders and owners of The New York Times. His mother was the granddaughter of Adolph Ochs. Golden's parents divorced when he was eight, and his father passed away five years later. He graduated from Baylor School in 1974 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in the history of Japanese art from Harvard University.
Academic Career
Golden pursued further studies in Japanese history at Columbia University, earning a Master's degree in 1980. After studying Northern Chinese at Beijing University, he moved to Tokyo University. Upon returning to the United States, he obtained a Master's degree in English from Boston University.
Writing Success
Golden's novel Memoirs of a Geisha achieved remarkable success, selling over 4 million copies and being translated into more than 30 languages. The novel intricately explores the world of geishas in pre-World War II Japan.
Personal Life
Arthur Golden resides with his family in Brookline, Massachusetts. He has two children, a son named Hayes and a daughter named Tess.
