Biography of Arthur Hiller
Arthur Hiller was a Canadian and American film and television director, actor, and producer. He was born in Edmonton, Alberta to Jewish immigrants Harry Hiller and Rose Garfin, who settled in Canada in 1912 after a few years of living in New York. He had two older sisters, Dora and Golda.
Early Life and Education
Upon arriving in Edmonton, his father opened a barbershop and later owned men's clothing stores and used musical instrument shops. Yiddish was the spoken language in the family, and the children attended school with instruction in this language. Hiller's parents subsidized the opening of the city's first Jewish theater, where he began performing in minor roles by the age of eleven.
Hiller graduated from the University College of the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1950, he earned a Master of Arts degree, and in 1995, he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
Career
Hiller began his career in the 1950s at the CBC Television in Toronto. There, he became a successful television director before transitioning to directing feature films in Hollywood.
From 1989 to 1993, Hiller served as the President of the Directors Guild of America, and from 1993 to 1997, he was the President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 2002, he was honored with a star on Canada's Walk of Fame and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. In 2006, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Personal Life
Hiller married Gwen Hiller in 1948, and they have two children and two grandchildren.
