After graduating from George W. Hewlett High School and later from Ohio University, Deutch immediately immersed himself in the showbiz industry, starting off in the field of music videos. He had the opportunity to work with artists such as Billy Idol, Billy Joel, and several others.

Directorial Debut

In 1986, Deutch made his directorial debut with the romantic comedy-drama 'Pretty in Pink', based on a screenplay by John Hughes. The film tells the story of a girl from a poor neighborhood and a boy from a wealthy family, and their complicated love affair. The movie was a successful directorial debut for Deutch.

Continued Success

Riding on the success of his first film, in 1987, Deutch collaborated with Hughes once again to direct 'Some Kind of Wonderful', a film similar in genre to their previous collaboration.
