Biography of Arthur Penn
Arthur Penn was born in Philadelphia, USA. He studied in Italy at the universities of Perugia and Florence, as well as at the Actors Studio in Los Angeles. Penn became interested in theater arts while in school and during World War II, he served as a director for an army theater. After the war, he enrolled at Black Mountain College in North Carolina.
In 1951, Penn was invited to work on the television program "Colgate Comedy Hour" and later became a director for the drama series "Gulf Playhouse: First Person". Throughout the 1950s, he continued to work in television.
In 1958, Penn directed his first film, "The Left-Handed Gun". Although it was received with indifference in the US, the film won the Grand Prize at the Brussels Film Festival. His next film, "The Miracle Worker" (1962), earned Penn an Academy Award for Best Director.
A turning point for Penn was the film "The Chase", and the gangster film "Bonnie and Clyde" made him a new star of American and world cinema. Other successful films by Penn include "Alice's Restaurant", "Little Big Man", and "Missouri Breaks".
