Early Life

Barry Primus was born in New York City in 1938. Reflecting on his youth, he once remarked that he "could easily have become a criminal if not for his decision to go into performing." After graduating high school, he studied at the prestigious HB Studio in Greenwich Village, which also produced graduates such as Murray Abraham, Anne Bancroft, Harvey Keitel, and Al Pacino.

Acting Career

Primus began his acting career in the early 1960s with minor roles in television series such as "Defenders," "East Side/West Side," and "N.Y.P.D." In the early 1970s, he gained recognition for his role in Martin Scorsese's critically acclaimed film "Mean Streets" (1973), and went on to star alongside Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli in Scorsese's "New York, New York" (1977). Throughout the 1980s, he continued to appear in numerous television shows, including the popular CBS series "Cagney & Lacey."

Directing and Filmmaking

In 1992, Primus took on the role of director and screenwriter for the first time with the film "Mistress," a tragicomedy about the hidden realities of Hollywood. The film featured an impressive cast, including Danny Aiello, Martin Landau, and Robert De Niro. Primus continued to direct and act in episodic television roles throughout the 1990s.

Teaching and Workshops

Alongside his acting and filmmaking career, Primus has dedicated himself to teaching, holding master classes in acting and directing at prestigious institutions such as the American Film Institute, the University of California, Los Angeles, the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, and numerous others worldwide. In 2006, he led workshops at the International Film Workshop in Russia and the Hollywood School in Ukraine.

Recent Projects

Since the early 2010s, Primus has focused on his role as a director and screenwriter. He is currently working on a film titled "20% Fiction," which explores the life of a renowned acting teacher who relocates from Los Angeles to a rural setting. Martin Landau plays the lead role in this highly anticipated project.
