Arthur Wing Pinero
Arthur Wing Pinero (1855-1934) was an English playwright known for his innovative and successful plays during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born on May 24, 1855, in London, Pinero quickly established himself as the most prosperous commercial playwright in London from 1880 to 1910.
Early Life and Career
Pinero was born into a Portuguese-Jewish family and initially pursued a career in law, following in his father's footsteps. However, his passion for the theater led him to pursue acting instead. He had limited success as an actor in Edinburgh in 1874 and later at the Globe Theatre in London.
Success as a Playwright
Pinero's breakthrough as a playwright came with his play "200 a Year," which was performed as a benefit in 1877. This was followed by two successful plays, "Daisy's Escape" in 1879 and "The Money Spinner" in 1880.
After these early successes, Pinero devoted himself entirely to writing plays. He perfected the technique of the well-made play, paving the way for plays with serious social issues. His plays "The Squire" in 1881 and "The Profligate" in 1889 foreshadowed the more serious works he would produce in the 1890s.
Notable Works
Pinero's play "The Second Mrs. Tanqueray" in 1893 was a sensation and marked a new stage in the development of theater. It was the first tragedy in a series of plays that portrayed women with complicated pasts. Other notable tragedies by Pinero include "Iris" in 1901 and "Mid-Channel" in 1909.
Later Years and Legacy
In 1909, Pinero was knighted for his contributions to the theater. He continued to work successfully as a playwright until his death in London on November 23, 1934. Pinero's plays were characterized by his skill in creating realistic characters, engaging dialogue, and compelling circumstances. His works had a lasting impact on the development of theater in England and continue to be performed and studied today.
