Military Career
Early Years and Command PositionsIn 1997, Artrun Hovhannisyan joined the Armed Forces of Armenia. After graduating from the Vazgen Sargsyan Military University in 2001 with the rank of Lieutenant, he became the Commander of an anti-tank platoon. He was then appointed Commander of an anti-tank battery in the same military unit in 2002. In 2004, he was assigned as the Commander of the Security Unit of the CSTO Permanent Operation.
Press Secretary and Military Analyst
In 2012, Hovhannisyan was appointed as the Press Secretary of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia. From 2010 to 2011, he served as a military expert at the Institute of Political Studies under the Office of the President of the Republic of Armenia.
Military Education and Lectures
Hovhannisyan holds a master's degree in History from the International Academy of Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, which he earned from 2010 to 2012. Since September 2013, he has been a lecturer at the Faculty of International Relations at Yerevan State University (YSU). In January 2014, he began teaching at the Vazgen Sargsyan Military Institute in the Command and Staff Faculty. He received the title of Candidate of Historical Sciences in 2014.
Military Theory and Publications
As a military theorist, Artrun Hovhannisyan aims to challenge conventional wisdom and stereotypes about warfare to prevent the Armenian Armed Forces from blindly adhering to outdated beliefs. He emphasizes the following:
Soviet military doctrines are not directly applicable to the newly formed Armenian Armed Forces due to their vast resource requirements.
Future warfare will prioritize irregular operations at the tactical level, electronic warfare at the operational level, and airpower at the strategic level.
Armenia needs a strong air force, especially acquiring Su-30 fighter jets.
Hovhannisyan's publications explore the role of air supremacy, the integration of air and air defense forces, and the complexities of 21st-century hybrid warfare. He emphasizes that future wars will be "network-centric."
Academic Activities
Since 2013, Hovhannisyan has been a researcher at the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia. He has also been teaching at the Vazgen Sargsyan Military Institute since January 2014.
