Early Life and EducationPedro Abad Santos was born in San Fernando, Pampanga, Philippines, on February 1, 1876. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila and went on to pursue a law degree, which he later abandoned to join the Philippine Revolution.
Revolutionary and Nationalist Activity
In 1896, Abad Santos joined the Katipunan, a secret society that led the Philippine Revolution against Spanish rule. He served as a general in the revolutionary army and was a key figure in the capture of San Fernando. After the Philippine-American War, Abad Santos became involved in the Partido Nacionalista, serving as a delegate to the Malolos Congress.
Influence of Tolstoy and Marx
Abad Santos initially advocated for agrarian reforms based on the teachings of Leo Tolstoy and Henry George. However, he later embraced Marxism and became a leading Marxist thinker in the Philippines.
The Socialist Party
In 1933, Abad Santos founded the Socialist Party of the Philippines, which sought to implement socialist policies and advocate for the rights of the oppressed peasantry. In 1938, the Socialist Party merged with the underground Communist Party of the Philippines to form a united left-wing movement.
Imprisonment and Death
During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during World War II, Abad Santos was imprisoned by the Japanese authorities. He was tortured and executed on May 2, 1944, at the age of 68.
