Biography of Arthur Rubinstein
Arthur Rubinstein was an American pianist of Polish descent who gained fame for his interpretations of romantic piano repertoire. He was born on January 28, 1887, in Lodz, Poland, which was then part of the Russian Empire. Rubinstein showed an early interest in music and began studying theoretical disciplines under M. Bruch and piano playing under G. Bart, a student of Liszt, in Berlin at the age of eight, recommended by J. Joachim, a renowned violinist and friend of Brahms.
Rubinstein made his debut in Berlin in 1898, performing with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. He gave many concerts, including his first visit to America in 1906, although he received a lukewarm reception from critics at the time. His breakthrough came in the 1920s, and his subsequent tour of the United States in 1937 was a triumph for the pianist. In 1941, he chose the United States as his permanent place of residence.
Rubinstein was a versatile musician, but he showcased his mastery in performing the masterpieces of great romantic composers of the past century, such as Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, and Brahms. His tone was rich and elegant, and his interpretations were characterized by a wide scope and grand architecture, setting him apart from the "careful" and cautious interpretations of the romantic repertoire. The pianist made numerous recordings and published an autobiographical book called "My Young Years" in 1973.
