Early Life and Career
Arutyun Vardanyan, also known as Ghor Vardanian-Vrejaru, was born in Leninakan (present-day Gyumri). He began his football career at Lori in Kirovakan before returning to his hometown in 1989 to play for Shirak.
Shirak and Armenian National Team
Vardanyan spent nine seasons with Shirak, becoming their most-capped player. He led the team to their first Armenian Premier League title in 1992 and was named Armenian Footballer of the Year in 1997. He also made his international debut for Armenia in 1994 and scored his only goal for the team in 1997.
European Club Career
In 1998, Vardanyan began a decade-long stint in Switzerland, playing for Lausanne Sport, Fortuna Köln, Young Boys, Servette, and Aarau. In 2003, he won the Swiss Super League bronze medal with Servette. After suffering an injury in 2005, he returned to play for Biel-Bienne in 2006, where he retired as a player.
International Retirement
Despite being recalled to the Armenian national team in 2005, Vardanyan declined to play, citing his desire to retire from international football. His last match for Armenia was in 2004.
Legal Issues
In 2007, Vardanyan was arrested in Switzerland for harboring four individuals, three of whom were illegal immigrants. Despite support from his club and the football community, he was sentenced to six months in prison.
Legacy
Vardanyan was known for his versatility and determination, playing multiple defensive positions and making key passes. He is regarded as one of Armenia's greatest football players. He retired with a total of 524 official appearances and 68 goals scored.
