Arvīds Barševskis: A Renowned Scientist and Educator
Early Life and EducationArvīds Barševskis was born in Daugavpils, Latvia. From 1983 to 1988, he pursued a degree in biology and chemistry at the Daugavpils Pedagogical Institute. In 1989, he furthered his entomological studies at the prestigious Moscow State University named after M. V. Lomonosov. Barševskis completed his doctoral dissertation in biology at the University of Latvia in 1994.
Academic Career at Daugavpils University
Barševskis' academic career began at the Daugavpils Pedagogical Institute (later University) in 1988. He served in various leadership positions, including Deputy Chairman of the Senate (1999-2004), Director of the Baltic Institute of Coleopterology (1999-2007), and Director of the Biology Study Program (1999-2002). In 2003, he became a professor in the Faculty of Biology.
In 2007, Barševskis was elected Rector of Daugavpils University, succeeding Zaiga Ikere. He has held this position since then. Under his leadership, the university has grown significantly in academic reputation and research impact.
Scientific Contributions
Barševskis is a renowned scientist in the field of entomology. He has authored over 87 scientific publications and his doctoral dissertation on "Austrumlatvijas skrejvaboles" (Eastern Latvian ground beetles) is a seminal work in the field. His research has led to the discovery of new species of beetles, including one named after him in Spain and another on the Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan.
Leadership in Latvian Academia
Beyond his contributions to Daugavpils University, Barševskis has also played a significant role in Latvian academia. In 2010, he became the Chairman of the Latvian Council of Rectors. In 2011, he was elected as an academician of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, becoming the first academician from Latgale.
