Jayavarman IV: Khmer Emperor and Founder of Koh Ker

In 921 CE, Jayavarman IV claimed the throne of the Khmer Empire, marking a pivotal moment in Cambodian history. He was the son of Mahendradevi, daughter of Indravarman I, and married his aunt Jayadevi, sister of Yasovarman I.

Rise to Power and Establishment of Koh Ker

At the end of Harshavarman I's reign, Jayavarman IV asserted his claim to the kingdom, departing from the capital and establishing his own center of power 70 kilometers northeast. He constructed a new capital, now known as Koh Ker, which became the de facto capital of the empire from 921 onwards.

Consolidation of Power

Harshavarman I's brother, Isanavarman II, failed to reunite the kingdom and retake power from the usurper. Upon Isanavarman II's death in 928, Jayavarman IV became the sole ruler of the Khmer Empire.

Reign and Legacy

During his reign, Koh Ker became the official capital of the empire. Jayavarman IV expanded the empire's boundaries and engaged in ambitious construction projects, including the construction of the Prasat Thom temple at Koh Ker. He died in 941 and received the posthumous name Parameshivapada.
