Ashly Biden: Social Justice Activist, Model, and Biden's Daughter
Ashley Blazer Biden is an American social justice activist, model, and the daughter of former Vice President Joe Biden. She has been involved in various social work initiatives and is the founder of the ethical fashion brand Livelihood Collection.
Early Life and Education
Ashley Biden was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on June 8, 1981, to Jill Biden and Joe Biden. She is the only child from her father's second marriage and has two step-siblings, Hunter Biden and the late Beau Biden. Biden grew up in a Catholic household and attended Wilmington Friends School.
She earned a bachelor's degree in cultural anthropology from Tulane University, where she interned with youth programs in Washington, D.C., before working as a waitress in Wilmington. Biden then pursued a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Social Policy & Practice.
Social Work and Advocacy
After graduating, Biden worked at West End Neighborhood House, where she helped develop employment and training programs for youth. She later spent 15 years at the Delaware Department of Children, Youth & Their Families, where she created programs focusing on juvenile justice, foster care, and mental health.
In 2012, she joined the Delaware Center for Justice as Deputy Director, working on criminal justice reform. In 2014, she became the Center's Executive Director, a role she held until 2019. During her tenure, she implemented the "Student Warriors Against Guns and Gangs" program, which provided educational resources and support groups to combat violence among youth.
Livelihood Collection
In 2017, Biden launched the Livelihood Collection, an ethical fashion brand presented at New York Fashion Week. The brand collaborated with Gilt Groupe and Aubrey Plaza to raise funds for community programs. Livelihood Collection's logo is an arrow piercing the letters "LH," inspired by Biden's brother, Beau, who died of brain cancer in 2015.
Biden created the brand to address income and racial inequality in the United States. All proceeds from its New York Fashion Week launch went to programs benefiting underserved communities. Ten percent of ongoing sales are donated to organizations in Anacostia, Washington, D.C., and Riverside, Wilmington.
Personal Life
In 2002, Biden was arrested in Chicago on charges of obstructing a police officer. She was released on bond. In 2010, she began dating Howard Krein, a plastic surgeon and otolaryngologist. They married in 2012 in a Catholic-Jewish interfaith ceremony.
Biden is a practicing Catholic and attended a private audience with Pope Francis in the Vatican in 2016. She spoke at the 2020 Democratic National Convention in support of her father's presidential candidacy.
