Biography of Ashot Kocharyan

Ashot Stepanovich Kocharyan was born on June 8, 1957, in Yerevan, Armenia. He is an Armenian political and state figure, as well as a diplomat.

Education and Academic Achievements

From 1974 to 1979, Kocharyan studied English language at the V. Brusov Institute of Russian and Foreign Languages. He then pursued his academic career by completing his postgraduate studies at the Institute of Philosophy and Law of the National Academy of Sciences from 1986 to 1990. During this time, he successfully defended his dissertation on war and peace related issues.

In 1992, Kocharyan attended special courses for diplomats at the Netherlands Institute of International Relations, "CLINGENDAL." He further enriched his knowledge and skills in diplomacy by attending the Vienna Diplomatic Academy from 1993 to 1994. Additionally, he completed advanced courses on human rights at the Academic University in Finland in 2001.

Professional Experience

Kocharyan's professional career began in the education sector, where he served as the Deputy Director of a school from 1982 to 1984. He also worked as a teacher of English and Russian languages at the Masiskaya Secondary School in 1984. Later, from 1990 to 1992, he held the position of a research secretary at the Institute of Philosophy and Law of the National Academy of Sciences in Armenia.

Kocharyan's diplomatic career started in 1992 when he became the First Secretary of the European Countries Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia. From 1994 to 1997, he led the United Nations department in Armenia, and then served as the First Secretary at the Embassy of Austria from 1997 to 1999. He continued his work in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the Head of the Department for Humanitarian Issues and Human Rights from 2000 to 2001. From 1999 to 2003, he worked as an advisor at the Department of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and later became its Chief.

In 2003, Kocharyan took on the role of Press Secretary to the President of Armenia. Since 2005, he has been serving as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Armenia to India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Indonesia.
