Jüri Jaakson: A Statesman of Estonia

Early Life and Education

Jüri Jaakson was born on January 16, 1870, in the village of Üue-Võidu, Estonia. He attended the private Treffe Gymnasium and later graduated from the law faculty of the University of Tartu in 1896.

Legal Career and Community Involvement

Following his graduation, Jaakson worked as an assistant solicitor in Viljandi (1897-1901) and Riga (1901-1902). From 1902 to 1914, he practiced law in Riga as a solicitor. During this period, he also served as the chairman of the Viljandi Agrarian Society (1898-1901).

Jaakson was deeply involved in Estonian cultural and social organizations. He was the president of the "Imanta" Estonian Society in Riga and headed the Estonian Educational and Welfare Society in Riga. He also played a key role in the establishment and administration of the Estonian Gymnasium of Emperor Alexander (1904-1920).

Political Involvement during World War I

During World War I, Jaakson's influence expanded. He became a member of the Council of the Tallinn City Bank (1915-1919) and the Central Society of Farmers of Northern Estonia (1915-1919). He also served as the chairman of the Tallinn Economic Union.

In 1917, after the February Revolution, Jaakson was appointed assistant commissioner of the Estland Governorate. He went on to become a member and assistant chairman of the Estonian Provincial Council (1917-1918).

The Estonian War of Independence

During the Estonian War of Independence (1918-1920), Jaakson served as the general plenipotentiary of the Estonian Provisional Government in relations with the German occupying forces. He later held the position of Minister of Justice (1918-1920).

Independent Estonia

After the war, Jaakson was elected as the State Elder of Estonia, the head of state, from 1924 to 1925. He then served as the president of the Bank of Estonia from 1926 to 1940. Jaakson also represented Estonia on the Financial Committee of the League of Nations in Geneva (1929-1936) and was a member of the National Economic Council (1935-1938).

Soviet Occupation and Death

Jaakson was arrested by the NKVD in 1941 and executed in the Sosva labor camp on April 20, 1942.
