Early Life and Education

Dorsa Derakhshani, an American chess player of Iranian descent, was born on April 15, 1998, in Tehran, Iran. Her precocious intelligence manifested early on, as she began reading at the tender age of 18 months and playing chess at two. By the age of six, she enrolled in a chess academy, honing her skills under the watchful eyes of expert coaches.

In 2017, Derakhshani embarked on a new chapter in her life, moving to the United States to attend Saint Louis University. There, she pursued a degree in Biology with a focus on Pre-Medicine while actively contributing to the university's chess team.

Chess Career: A Journey of Success

Derakhshani's chess career began at the young age of seven, when she triumphed at the Iranian National Youth Tournament. Her meteoric rise continued with three gold medals at the Asian Youth Chess Championships: in 2012 for girls under 14, and in 2013 and 2014 for girls under 16. She also represented Iran in the women's division of the Asian Nations Cup in 2012 and 2014.

In 2016, Derakhshani achieved significant milestones in her chess career. She was awarded the titles of Woman Grandmaster and International Master. Additionally, she became a FIDE Trainer and an accredited FIDE journalist.

Conflict with Iranian Chess Federation

Derakhshani's path to success was not without its obstacles. In 2014, during a tournament in India, she faced criticism from Iranian officials for her attire, which included form-fitting jeans. Despite winning three games and reaching the final, her performance was overshadowed by the controversy.

The Iranian Chess Federation retaliated against Derakhshani's defiance of the hijab rule by barring her from representing Iran and participating in chess tournaments within the country. The decision sparked widespread backlash in the international chess community, with calls for the World Chess Federation (FIDE) to relocate the World Championship from Iran to a country where women are not subjected to mandatory hijab.

Career in the United States: A New Chapter

Following her ban from the Iranian national team, Derakhshani sought solace and opportunity in the United States. She joined the Saint Louis University chess team, known for its strong players and the guidance of renowned coach Alejandro Ramirez. Since then, she has represented the United States in various chess competitions.

Derakhshani's achievements in the United States include a bronze medal in the World Prestigious University Chess Invitational (2019) and third place in the U.S. Women's Chess Championship (2020). Her determination and talent have made her a force to be reckoned with on the American chess scene.
