Ashug Valeh: The Masterful Azerbaijani Bard

Early Life and Education

Ashug Valeh, a renowned 18th-century Azerbaijani bard, was born Sefi in 1729 in the village of Abdalgulyabli, Karabakh. At the young age of eight, his father entrusted him to the teachings of Mullah Mahmud. By the age of 14, Sefi had mastered the Quran but declined becoming a religious leader.

Artistic Awakening

With his father's consent, Sefi sought apprenticeship under the acclaimed Ashug Samed, who imparted the art of playing the saz and the craft of poetry to his eager pupil. Ashug Samed, who often took his student to gatherings, is believed to have bestowed upon him the pen name "Valeh," meaning "one who is in love."

Poetic Legacy

In his masterpiece, "Vujudiyyatnama," Ashug Valeh vividly recounts his childhood, adolescence, schooling, first love at age 15, marriage, travels, and encounters with prominent figures. His lyrics eloquently express his personal experiences and observations.

Influence on Literature

Ashug Valeh's works had a profound impact on the development of written Azerbaijani literature. He forged close ties with the notable poet Molla Panah Vagif, engaging in poetic exchanges. In a poem dedicated to Vagif in 1807, Valeh wrote:

"O Vagif, your words are like the breath of spring,

Your verses cure the sick and heal the broken."
Artistic Connections

Ashug Valeh interacted with numerous literary figures of his time, including Ashug Jalal, Ustad Samed, Ashug Feyzulla, Masum Effendi, Ashug Qambar, and the poet Abdullah Janizadeh. Their discussions and artistic collaborations further enriched the Azerbaijani literary and musical landscape.
