Azerbaijani Ashug of the 20th Century
Early Life and InfluencesKamandar Gamid oglu Efendiyev was born on October 21, 1932, in the village of Kapanaghchi, Marneuli district, Georgian SSR. From a young age, he developed a passion for poetry and playing the saz (traditional string instrument). Inspired by renowned ashugs such as Sadikh, Muhammad Shikhli, and Shah Amrah, Kamandar mastered the art of ashug.
Active Participation in Ashug Culture
Kamandar participated actively in the 1959 ashug gathering in Moscow and the 6th Congress of Azerbaijani Ashugs held in Baku. His performances began airing on Georgian and Azerbaijani radio and television in the 1970s.
Literary Contributions
In 1989, the prominent Azerbaijani publisher "Yazichi" released Kamandar's first book of poems titled "Borchali Layla" (meaning "Lullaby from Borchali"). The foreword was written by the renowned philosopher and scholar Jamal Mustafayev, a native of Borchali.
Legacy and Impact
Ashug Kamandar passed away in his hometown of Kapanaghchi, Georgia, in 2000. His song "Sallama Geraylisi" remains a beloved classic, based on the lyrics of Kamandar Efendiyev.
