Athing Mu: A Rising Star in Track and Field
Early Life and BackgroundAthing Mu is an American middle-distance runner who burst onto the international scene at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Born in Trenton, New Jersey, on June 8, 2002, Mu is a first-generation American whose parents immigrated to the United States from South Sudan.
Record-Breaking Achievements
Mu has a remarkable track record filled with record-breaking performances. On February 24, 2019, she set the American women's 600-meter indoor record at the 2019 USA Track and Field Indoor Championships with a time of 1:23.57.
On February 6, 2021, Mu ran a blistering 50.52 in the women's indoor 400-meter race, 0.3 seconds faster than Sanya Richards' official world junior mark under 20 years old. While Mu's time was slower than the 50.36 set by fellow American Sydney McLaughlin, it did not meet the criteria for world record ratification.
On February 27, she clocked 1:58.40 in the 800 meters, setting a collegiate indoor record and a world junior record for under-20 athletes. She surpassed the previous collegiate record by over two seconds. On April 17, Mu set the U.S. collegiate record in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.73 during an outdoor meet in Waco, Texas.
Collegiate Success
At the 2021 NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Mu lowered her collegiate record to 1:55.21 in the 400-meter run. She then anchored Texas A&M's women's 4x400-meter relay team to victory, setting a new collegiate record of 3:22.34.
Tokyo Olympics Glory
At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Mu won two gold medals in the 800-meter run and the women's 4x400-meter relay. She broke the American women's record in the 800 meters with her time of 1.55.21 and ended a 53-year Olympic gold drought in the event for the United States.
