Early Life and Career Beginnings

Audra Marie Lindley was born on June 24, 1918, in Los Angeles, California, to prominent figures in show business. This privileged background afforded her opportunities to pursue her passion for acting in Hollywood. Lindley moved to New York City and graced the Broadway stage in renowned productions such as "On Golden Pond," "Playhouse 90," and "Long Day's Journey into Night."

Personal Life and Family

In 1943, Lindley married Hardy Ulm, with whom she had five children. She prioritized her family over her career, taking a hiatus from acting for several years.

Television Breakthrough and Iconic Role

Lindley's return to television in 1951 marked a turning point. She played roles in popular soap operas "Search for Tomorrow" and "Another World." Her comedic flair also shone through in the sitcom "Bridget Loves Bernie." However, it was her portrayal of Helen Roper in the groundbreaking comedy "Three's Company" in 1977 that catapulted her to fame. Lindley's chemistry with Norman Fell as her character's husband resonated with audiences, leading to the spin-off series "The Ropers."

Continued Success in Film and Television

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Lindley continued to flourish on screen. She appeared in "Revenge of the Stepford Wives," "Bridesmaids," "Tales from the Crypt," and many others. Her commitment to her craft extended to paying for a reshoot of a scene in "Desert Hearts" that she felt was not up to par.
