German SS Officer During World War II
Early CareerFelix Steiner was a German officer who served in the Waffen-SS during World War II. He joined the SS in 1934 and rose to the rank of Unterscharführer (lieutenant) by 1936.
World War II
Invasion of Poland and FranceIn September 1939, Steiner led a company in the SS-Regiment Deutschland during the invasion of Poland. He was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class. During the French campaign, he earned the Iron Cross 1st Class.
Operation Barbarossa
From June 1941 onwards, Steiner fought on the Eastern Front. As commander of the 1st Battalion of the SS-Regiment Germania in the SS-Division Wiking, he led troops in fierce battles, earning the Golden German Cross in February 1942 and the Knight's Cross in April 1942.
From Oak Leaves to Swords
In April 1943, Steiner received the Oak Leaves (No. 233) to his Knight's Cross for his actions in the Battle of Kharkov. He later earned the Swords (No. 39) to his Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves on October 10, 1943, during the Battle of the Dnieper. This was awarded posthumously, as Steiner was killed in action on the same day.
