August-Erich Kyber
Early Life and Education
Born in Livonia, the future physician and polar explorer received his medical training at the medical university. After completing his studies in Berlin and Göttingen, he obtained his doctorate in medicine from the University of Tartu in 1820.
Polar Expeditions
In 1820, Kiber embarked on his first polar expedition under the command of Baron F. P. Wrangel. He returned from this expedition in 1824. In 1825, Kiber joined Wrangel's round-the-world voyage, which spanned from August 1825 to September 1827.
Medical Career and Later Life
Following his expeditions, Kiber served in various medical capacities in St. Petersburg, Kronstadt, and, from 1854, at the Black Sea Fleet, where he became the General Staff Doctor. He was also a correspondent for the Academy of Sciences.
Publications
Kiber's written works included an article on the Chukchi people published in the "Siberian Messenger" (1824). He also contributed to various medical journals and played a role in compiling the account of Wrangel's polar journey.
