Thomas Coryate: Adventurer and Chronicler
Thomas Coryate, an English traveler and writer, lived during the late reign of Queen Elizabeth I and the early reign of King James I. Extant in two volumes, Coryate's writings document his observations made during extensive travels, often on foot, throughout Europe and Asia.
The "Furcifer" of Forks
Coryate is widely credited with introducing the fork to England, earning him the sobriquet "Furcifer." Derived from Latin, the term could signify either "rogue" or "fork-bearer." Coryate's introduction of the umbrella, known as "ombrello" in Italian, also enriched the English language.
Early Life and Education
Born in Somerset, Coryate attended Winchester College and subsequently studied at Gloucester Hall. His academic pursuits led him to the court of Prince Henry, King James I's eldest son, where he served as a "fool" or jester.
