Life and Education

Ludwig Schwanthaler, a renowned German historical painter and sculptor, was born in 1802 in Munich. He received his artistic training in Hanover before moving to Munich in 1836 to further his education.

Artistic Journey

For several years, Schwanthaler studied sculpture under the guidance of Ludwig von Schwanthaler and painting with Peter von Cornelius. His artistic style was heavily influenced by the romanticism prevalent during his time.

Director of Nuremberg Art School

In 1853, Schwanthaler was appointed director of the Nuremberg Art School. He held this position until his passing and played a significant role in its development and the promotion of art and industrial education in Bavaria.

Sculpture and Paintings

Schwanthaler's sculptures exhibited a painterly quality, while his paintings displayed the decorative elegance of his father-in-law, Wilhelm von Kaulbach. Among his notable sculptural works are the "Genius of Water" fountain in Cincinnati, the colossal statue of Prince Henry Posthumus Reuß in Gera, and the bronze monument to Kepler in Weil der Stadt.

In painting, Schwanthaler created nine ceiling frescos for the Hanoverian Theatre, designed imperial portraits for the Nuremberg Palace, and illustrated Goethe's "Faust." His "Four Seasons" drawings are also notable examples of his artistic skill.
