Biography of August-Wilhelm Scheer

August-Wilhelm Scheer is a German professor specializing in the formalization and computer analysis of business processes. He is best known for his work on the development of the ARIS model, which laid the foundations for this field.

Early Career

Scheer obtained his doctorate degree in 1972 from the University of Hamburg, where his research focused on project control. In 1974, he successfully completed the habilitation process in Hamburg, further establishing his expertise in the field of business management and information systems.

Founding IDS Scheer AG

In 1984, Scheer founded IDS Scheer, a major computer company specializing in the development of software for business process management. Many experts consider this company to be the pioneer in the field of software development for business process management. Scheer served as the founder and CEO of IDS Scheer until 2005.

Contributions to Innovation and Education

In 1997, Scheer founded IMC AG, a company focused on innovative educational technologies. This company had a close relationship with the University of Saarland, where Scheer served as the head of the Institute for Information Systems. He worked alongside Wolfgang Kraemer, Frank Milius, and Wolfgang Zimmermann on various projects.

Recognition and Achievements

Throughout his career, Scheer received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the field. In 2003, he was awarded the Philip Morris Research Prize and the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. In 2005, he received the Erich Gutenberg Prize and the Federal Cross of Merit. He was also accepted into the German Informatics Society in the same year.

Later Career and Personal Interests

In 2006, Scheer became a member of the Council for Innovation and Development in the Federal Government. He was later elected as the president of the German Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications, and New Media. In 2010, he received the University of St. Gallen Prize for his contributions to science.

Apart from his successful career in academia and business, Scheer is also an avid saxophonist. He often refers to jazz theory in his presentations and even performs small jazz compositions with his band. Since 2001, he has funded a position for a lecturer in jazz theory and history at the University for Music Saar.

ARIS Model and EPC

One of Scheer's most significant projects is the development of the ARIS model. This model allows for the representation of business processes in the form of diagrams, greatly facilitating the analysis and processing of data by computer information systems. The ARIS model became the flagship product of IDS Scheer.

Scheer also played a key role in the popularization of the Event-driven Process Chain (EPC) concept, a technique used primarily for data processing before building ERP models. This concept has been widely adopted and forms the basis of various software products and tools.
