Biography of Alvaro Marcelo Garcia Linera

Alvaro Marcelo Garcia Linera was born on October 19, 1962, in the city of Cochabamba. He completed his secondary education at the Saint Augustine School and then studied mathematics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City. During his studies in Mexico from 1980 to 1985, he participated in the Central American Solidarity campaign.

After returning to Bolivia, Garcia Linera attempted to apply his socialist ideals that were influenced by Bolivian writers Fausto Reynaga and Rene Zavaleta. He joined the group "Ayllus Rojos", but his Marxist politics did not succeed, leading him to resort to more radical methods of struggle. In 1990, together with Felipe Quispe, Garcia Linera organized the Tupac Katari Guerrilla Army, which consisted of dissatisfied miners and indigenous peasants. He was arrested after his army destroyed an electrical distribution tower in the village of La Paz and was charged with armed rebellion and terrorism.

From 1992 to 1997, Garcia Linera was imprisoned, during which time he began studying sociology. After his release, he worked as a university professor and became a political analyst and news commentator. During this period, he published several books that reflected his political interests. In 1989, "Critique of the Nation" was released, followed by "Re proletarization" in 1999, "Condition of workers" two years later, and "Multinational State" in 2005.

Garcia Linera is known for his support of indigenous and left-centrist political movements in South America, despite his good education and middle-class background. He is a member of the Movement for Socialism. In his monograph, Garcia Linera demonstrates various political and social organizations as part of the rise of the Bolivian people.

In January 2006, after the election of Evo Morales as President of Bolivia, Alvaro Marcelo Garcia Linera was appointed Vice President. They both are members of the Movement for Socialism. In his speeches, Garcia Linera argues for a not-so-new theory of socialism as the only future for Latin America. He is also willing to compromise with the opposition representing separatist forces in eastern Bolivia, which demonstrates his abilities as a prepared politician, theorist, and organizer.
