Early Life and Education
Aziz Aliyev was born on December 20, 1897, in an Azerbaijani family in Erivan, Erivan Governorate. He received his secondary education at a gymnasium. Later, he enrolled in the Military Medical Academy in Saint Petersburg.
Medical Career
In 1918, Aliyev's family moved to Nakhchivan and then to Baku in the early 1920s. Aliyev worked as a doctor and engaged in teaching and scientific research. He successfully defended his doctoral dissertation.
Political and Governmental Roles
From 1935 to 1938, Aliyev led the Azerbaijan Medical Institute. Subsequently, he served as rector of Azerbaijan State University and as People's Commissar of Health of the Azerbaijan SSR.
On July 21, 1938, Aliyev was appointed Secretary of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR. In 1941, he became Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR.
Wartime and Post-War Activities
During World War II, Aliyev served as a member of the Military Council of the 47th Army in Iran. He also held the position of 3rd Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan SSR.
In 1942, Aliyev was appointed 1st Secretary of the Dagestan Regional Committee of the Communist Party. In 1948, he was transferred to Moscow to work in the USSR Ministry of Health and later in the USSR Council of Ministers.
Later Career and Legacy
In 1950, Aliyev returned to Azerbaijan as Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers. However, due to fabricated charges, he was dismissed a year later and appointed as Director of the Institute of Orthopedics and Restorative Surgery. He was later released from this position and sent to a hospital in Sabunchi.
In 1954, Aliyev was reinstated as Director of the Institute of Orthopedics and Restorative Surgery. He later served as Secretary of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR and was elected as a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.
Aziz Aliyev was the grandfather of former Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. He passed away on October 14, 1962, in Baku.
