In 2017, Bad Wolves emerged as a formidable force in the metal music genre. The quintet, comprising Tommy Vext (vocals), John Boecklin (drums), Doc Coyle (lead guitar), Chris Cain (rhythm guitar), and Kyle Konkiel (bass), quickly gained recognition with their electrifying rendition of The Cranberries' iconic hit, "Zombie."
Genesis of a Rock Band
Prior to joining forces, the members of Bad Wolves honed their craft in various other musical projects. In 2015, John Boecklin, fresh from his departure from Devildriver, embarked on writing original music that later became the foundation of Bad Wolves' debut album, "Disobey." Sending these tracks to Tommy Vext for vocal recording ignited a creative spark that propelled the band forward.
The Origin of the Band's Name
The name "Bad Wolves" was conceived during a late-night pizza break after a particularly grueling recording session, according to John Boecklin. "The bands we were in before had these hard-hitting names. This time, we wanted something fun and playful," the band members explained.
Blending Heavy and Light
Musically, Bad Wolves defies easy categorization. While critics and fans alike identify their sound as primarily heavy metal and hardcore, the band refuses to be pigeonholed. "We're heavy and we're light all at the same time. We make the music that we want to make. Everybody brings in their own ideas, so it's a melting pot of music," John Boecklin once remarked.
The Impact of "Disobey"
Bad Wolves' debut album, "Disobey" (2018), showcased the band's heavy side with singles such as "Learn to Live," "Toast to the Ghost," and the cover of "Zombie." The album's success extended beyond sales and critical acclaim. It caught the attention of Dolores O'Riordan, lead singer of The Cranberries.
Collaboration and Loss
Dolores O'Riordan expressed her admiration for Bad Wolves' rendition of "Zombie" and expressed a desire to collaborate with them in the studio. Tragically, this dream remained unfulfilled when O'Riordan was found dead on January 15, 2018, just hours before the scheduled recording session. "The night before the recording, I couldn't sleep because I was so excited. I was so stoked to finally work with one of my idols. Then the next morning, I get a message saying Dolores O'Riordan's gone. I couldn't believe it. I thought it was a sick joke," Tommy Vext recalled in an interview.
Honoring a Legacy
Despite the tragedy, Bad Wolves decided to release their version of "Zombie" as a tribute to Dolores O'Riordan. The proceeds generated from its Billboard success and viral music video were donated to her children. Critics initially suggested that the success of "Disobey" was due to its timely release, but Bad Wolves has since proven their mettle with numerous sold-out concerts alongside renowned bands like Five Finger Death Punch, Nickelback, Shinedown, and Papa Roach.
N.A.T.I.O.N. and Beyond
In 2019, Bad Wolves released their sophomore album, "N.A.T.I.O.N.," which featured singles like "I'll Be There," "Killing Me Slowly," "Sober," and "Crying Game." While the album did not reach the same chart success as "Disobey," it showcased the band's versatility and songwriting prowess. Bad Wolves also released exclusive cover tracks for the online platform Pantheon, featuring interpretations of hits by Adele, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Nirvana, and others.
A New Chapter
In 2020, Bad Wolves embarked on a European tour in support of "N.A.T.I.O.N." alongside metal veterans Megadeth and Five Finger Death Punch. Immediately following the tour, the band retreated to Sparrow Sound in Los Angeles, California, to work on new material with producer Joseph McQueen. In March 2020, Tommy Vext shared a snippet of a new song on Instagram. The release date for the upcoming album remains unknown, but Bad Wolves has teased fans with glimpses of their studio sessions on social media.
