Biography of Corey Todd Taylor

Corey Todd Taylor, the frontman and vocalist of the American band "Slipknot," is also the founder and member of the band Stone Sour, the manager of the metal band Facecage from De Moines, and the owner of the recording studio Great Big Mouth Records. Corey was also a member of the band "The Rejects" for one show at Safari on August 22, 1998, after which he was fired. He sang on Sister Soliel's album and recorded four tracks with Josh Rand. Corey Taylor was born on December 8, 1973, in De Moines, Iowa, USA. He grew up in poverty, with his mother constantly moving from place to place, so by the age of 12, Corey had lived in 25 states. He did not know his father (his mother forbade them from meeting) and only met him for the first time in 2005. Throughout his childhood, Corey suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder, a condition that made him obsessed with the smallest things. Corey had a habit of counting steps up to 8, with his right foot counting even numbers and his left foot counting odd numbers. This sometimes drove his mother crazy. After returning to Iowa, in Waterloo, Corey experienced abuse, poverty, and depression. At the age of 12, Corey became addicted to drugs. At 14, he was into cocaine, and at 15, he wanted to leave this world. However, after waking up 20 miles from home, he decided to quit. Corey's mother gave him to his grandmother, and he lived with her in De Moines.

Musical Career

Elvis Presley was the first inspiration for Corey. He learned about him from his grandmother, who was also a fan. Later, Corey found two more role models: Sebastian Bach, the frontman of the band Skid Row, and Henry Rollins, the frontman of the band Black Flag. One day, his grandmother gave Corey a guitar, and that's where his musical career began. In 1992, at the age of 19, Corey wanted to create his own band. Together with his friend Joel Ekman, Corey formed the band Stone Sour. The band released several demos but only gained popularity among a small group of fans in Iowa. Besides working in the band, Corey got a job at a sex shop, where members of Slipknot helped him get hired – Joey, Shawn, and Mick. In 1998, Corey was invited to sing a few songs with Slipknot. Corey agreed and started his involvement in the band as the second vocalist. Soon, his singing began to dominate the music more than the first vocalist, Anders Colsefini. The band decided to put Anders on backing vocals, allowing Corey to perform almost all of Slipknot's vocal parts. Offended, Anders soon left the band, leaving only one vocalist. However, Slipknot was not Corey's main focus at the time. He had his own band, Stone Sour, and he wanted to devote his attention to it. Frustrated, the members of Slipknot threatened to fire Corey from his job at the sex shop, which they helped him get, so he decided to leave Stone Sour and focus on Slipknot. Finding a producer and a label, the band quickly became popular in 1998. But in 2001, Slipknot faced its worst times. The band did not want to play together, and the members did not speak to each other. Many thought it was the end for Slipknot. All the members of the band dispersed into side projects to distract themselves from Slipknot, and Corey was no exception. Since 2000, after Stone Sour member Josh Rand showed Corey some of his songs, he decided to revive the band. In 2002, they recorded an album and started touring. On September 17, 2002, Corey's girlfriend Scarlett gave birth to his son, Griffin Parker Taylor. Corey was happy to see his child grow, but it was during this time that he started drinking heavily. In 2003, Slipknot was supposed to reunite to record a new album. No one in the band wanted to go back, but only one member, Corey Taylor, decided firmly to leave. He had already planned everything and was about to call Shawn Crahan and say, "Fuck it, I don't want this. I'd rather shoot myself than do this." Taking a deep breath, Corey took his cell phone and dialed his old friend's number. Clown was busy. "And you know what?" the vocalist solemnly says. "If he hadn't been busy, I wouldn't be here today." His wife's words made Corey think. During the recording of the album, Corey dedicated a song to his wife, Vermilion, and wrote a song about love (Virus Of Life), calling it a virus that drains all the juices of life. Realizing that alcohol wasn't worth it, Corey quit drinking and opened a new chapter in his life. In 2004, on March 11, Corey married his fiancée Scarlett. She became Scarlett Taylor. The wedding was quiet, so there was no fuss in the press. In 2005, Corey reunited with his long-lost father. Corey dedicated many songs to his father before their meeting, such as Eyeless and Eyeore. After the tour in support of Slipknot, Corey returned to Stone Sour, and by this time, he had undergone a complete reassessment of his values. The band released their second album, which was more successful than the first. In 2007, Corey Taylor recorded and starred in a music video for the song "I'm Not Jesus" with the band Apocalyptica. In 2008, Corey Taylor divorced his wife Scarlett Taylor. Like every member of Slipknot, Corey Taylor wore a mask during concerts and changed it with the release of each new album. His first mask resembled a regular bag over his head. It was a forged mask with holes through which he pushed his dreadlocks every time he put it on. This caused him a lot of pain, so he made a latex mask, cut off some of his own locks, and attached them to it. Corey enlarged the mouth and eye openings in the mask. He also started dyeing his dreadlocks in green and the mask in gray and purple. Another version of the mask appeared, painted in white. Corey's mask underwent significant changes. If before it covered his entire head, now it only covered his face. The mask now resembled a scary burnt and disfigured face, dark green in color. The parts of the mask were fastened with staples. In addition, he started dyeing his hair in three colors: blue, red, and purple. Corey's mask covered his entire head again, like during the Iowa album, but now there were no dreadlocks. On the head, besides different-sized eye openings and a mouth opening, there was a hole where Corey inserted his hair. He dyed his hair light in color. Shaved bald, Corey repainted the mask in gray and added black threads at the top. He also dyed the bald spot, visible through the mask, in gray. Corey used to dress like a priest on stage: a long gown, long hair. He is passionate about writing various scripts, stories, poems, and other literature. Corey also enjoys keeping a tour diary. On stage, Corey is wild and crazy, but in life, he is a very calm person. "On stage, I release all the negative energy, embody my fears, and everything dark around me." Corey's favorite horror movie is "The Exorcist." His first vinyl record is Iron Maiden's "Somewhere in Time." In Corey's opinion, the best metal bands are Black Sabbath and Slayer. His favorite movie is "From Dusk Till Dawn" by Tarantino. His favorite books are "On the Road," "Please Kill Me" (about the punk movement), and all the Harry Potter books. His motto in life is "If you want to be respected, be cautious." His favorite superhero is Spider-Man, and among celebrities, it's George W. Bush. Those who influenced him in life, not just in music, are Bruce Lee, Darth Vader, Snake Plissken, Jesse Custer (the Preacher), bowling, Jack Daniels, William Wallace, James Bond, Jack Kerouac, Raoul Duke, bungee jumping, Bill Hicks, Lenny Bruce, Marlboros, and Conan the Barbarian. But if he had to choose one, he would choose the Lindbergh Baby. Corey has an excess of acid and stomach problems, which often cause him to vomit. This also affects his voice. Sometimes, he cannot speak for months due to this. But before concerts, Corey doesn't eat anything. So, he only vomits with water. Corey is a very intellectual person. He proved this by winning the "Brain Drain" quiz in Metal Hammer's magazine. Some questions were about knowledge of rock music. The quiz was held among 12 rock stars, and Corey was able to top the list. Speaking of the 20th question, it was, "Which actor played in the last James Bond 007 series?" and Corey believes it was "Sean Connery."
