Early Life and Education
Bajram Begaj was born on March 20, 1967, in Rrogozhine, Albania. He attended the University of Tirana and graduated with a medical degree in 1989. In 1998, he became a practicing military physician. Begaj also holds a professional doctorate and the academic rank of "associated professor" in medicine.
Military Career
Begaj has had a distinguished 31-year military career. He has participated in numerous training seminars and courses on security and defense, including the Higher Medical Postgraduate School, a specialization in gastrohepatology, management courses, and a strategic medical leadership course in the United States, as well as a specialized medical course and a public health course in Greece. He has held various military positions, including Chief of the Military Medical Unit and Deputy Military Director, Director of the Military Hospital in Tirana, and Director of the Health Inspectorate.
Chief of General Staff
In July 2020, Begaj was appointed Chief of General Staff of the Albanian Armed Forces and assumed office the same month.
Presidency
On June 4, 2022, Begaj was elected President of Albania by the Albanian Parliament with 78 votes in favor, 4 against, and 1 abstention. 57 opposition MPs boycotted the vote, claiming that the nomination process was illegitimate. He succeeded Ilir Meta and took office on July 24, 2022. Begaj is the fifth President of Albania with a military background, following Ahmet Zogu, Ramiz Alia, Alfred Moisiu, and Bujar Nishani.
