Early Dreams and Career

Irving's passion for aviation began at a young age when he encountered a professional pilot who happened to be from Jamaica while visiting his parent's bookstore in Miami, Florida. After graduating from Miami Northwestern High School, where he also played football, Irving turned down a football scholarship from the University of Florida and started working to earn money for flight school. He washed planes and spent hours on flight simulators to gain experience. Eventually, he obtained his pilot's license and became a certified aviator.

The Record-Breaking Journey

However, Irving's dream was just beginning. He set his sights on circumnavigating the world in an airplane. Finding sponsors for such an ambitious endeavor proved to be a challenge, with Irving receiving over 50 rejections. Nevertheless, he remained determined to prove to himself and others that he could achieve the impossible.

In 2007, Irving embarked on his legendary journey, flying a Cessna 400 light aircraft. It took him 97 days, with 26 stops along the way. He faced various weather conditions, including storms, monsoons, snowstorms, and sandstorms. Finally, he landed in Miami, where a massive crowd awaited his arrival. At the age of 23, Barrington Irving became the youngest person in the world to complete a solo circumnavigation of the globe in a light aircraft. He was also the first Jamaican and first dark-skinned individual to accomplish this feat.

Legacy and Continuing Achievements

Despite initially facing skepticism and sarcastic remarks, Irving proved his critics wrong and fulfilled his dream. In 2012, his record was surpassed by 22-year-old Swedish pilot Carlo Schmid, but Irving still takes pride in his accomplishments. Following his historic flight, he founded the non-profit organization "Experience Aviation," which helps children and teenagers interested in aviation gain practical experience.

Barrington Irving believes that the only person capable of hindering someone from achieving greatness is themselves. His determination and perseverance inspire others to follow their dreams and overcome obstacles.
