Early Life and Career
Barry Dennen was born on February 22, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois. In the early 1960s, he moved to New York City, where he developed a close relationship with Barbra Streisand and is credited with playing a significant role in her early career.
The Golden Age of London Theatre
Dennen spent 15 years living in London, where he established himself as a leading stage actor. In 1968, he landed the lead role in Hal Prince's production of "Cabaret," for which he received the prestigious Evening Standard Award.
Jesus Christ Superstar
In 1970, Dennen first performed the iconic role of Pontius Pilate in the original album recording of "Jesus Christ Superstar." He reprised the role on Broadway in 1971 and in Norman Jewison's 1973 film adaptation.
A Versatile Performer
Throughout his career, Dennen appeared in numerous film and television roles, ranging from the Mexican bandit in the television series "Batman" to cameos in "Superman 3," "The Shining," and "Titanic." He also lent his voice to several video games, including "Metal Gear Solid 2," "Grim Fandango," and "Too Human."
Screenwriting and Autobiography
Beyond his acting career, Dennen was also an accomplished screenwriter, with credits including the episode "The Secret Cinema" for the television series "Amazing Stories" and "Demonella" for "The Comic Strip." In 1997, he published his autobiography, "My Life With Barbra: A Love Story," which chronicled his relationship with Streisand and his journey towards accepting his homosexuality.
Later Years
In his later years, Dennen continued to perform and tour with the "Jesus Christ Superstar Show." He also returned to the stage in 2006 in the role of Bertolt Brecht in the play "Silent Partners."
