Early Life and Interest in Egyptology

Growing up on the outskirts of Birmingham, British archaeologist Barry Kemp developed an early fascination for Egyptology and archaeology.

Academic Career

In 1962, Kemp graduated from the University of Liverpool with a degree in Egyptology. The following year, he joined the faculty of the University of Cambridge as an assistant lecturer. He rose through the ranks, becoming a reader in 1991 and a professor of Egyptology until his retirement in 2007.

Amarna Excavations

From 1977 onwards, Kemp assumed leadership of excavations in Amarna, Egypt, where he spent over four decades uncovering the ancient city founded by Pharaoh Akhenaten.

Publications

Kemp authored several influential books on ancient Egypt, including the best-selling "Ancient Egypt: Anatomy of a Civilization" (1989), "100 Hieroglyphs: Think Like an Egyptian" (2005), and "The City of Akhenaten and Nefertiti: Armana and Its People" (2012).

Honors and Affiliations

Kemp was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1992 and became Senior Fellow of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research. He received a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in recognition of his contributions to the field.

Legacy

Barry Kemp passed away on May 16, 2024, at the age of 84. His legacy as a renowned Egyptologist and prominent figure in archaeological research continues to inspire generations of scholars.
