Early Life and EducationBaşak Gümülcinelioğlu Çıtanak was born on October 22, 1991, in Istanbul, Turkey. Her family belonged to an ethnic minority that emigrated from the Greek community of Komotini after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. Her surname translates as "descendant of a person from Komotini," reflecting their historical background.
Başak grew up in the Fatih district, a historic center filled with landmarks. She attended the elite Bahçelievler State School, which had partnerships with Germany and other countries. From a young age, she participated in summer programs in London, Geneva, and Brussels, broadening her horizons.
After graduating from high school, Başak traveled to Kansas on an AFS exchange program, where she received a scholarship and earned two high school diplomas. While in the US, she became involved in theater and even performed in a musical. Despite an illness that forced her to return home, Başak continued her studies.
Architectural and Artistic Pursuits
Başak pursued a degree in Architecture and Design at Bahçeşehir University and went on to complete a Master's in Architectural Design at Istanbul Technical University. Alongside her architectural studies, she embarked on an acting career. She trained under prominent actor and writer Müjdat Gezen and later attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
As a student, Başak worked in an architectural firm but eventually relocated to Europe to pursue acting.
Acting Career
Başak has performed on stage, including productions at the Istanbul State Theater and BKM for three years. She also translated Morgan Lloyd Malcolm's "Bumblebee" into Turkish, which premiered at Alt Sahne Theater in 2019.
In 2020, she landed her breakout role as Piril Baytekin in the hit series "Sen Çal Kapımı." Her background in architecture aligned with the show's plotline, which featured a young woman dreaming of an internship in Italy and a pragmatic architect. Başak's vibrant performance garnered attention despite her supporting role.
She also recorded the series' main soundtrack, "Sen Çal Kapımı," which won an award at the Number One Music Awards. Her single "Bir Anda" was released the same year.
Television and Film Success
Başak joined the drama series "Yargı" in 2021, playing a prosecutor in a complex and captivating story. In 2022, she starred in the romantic comedy "Aşk Bu mu?"
Personal Life
Başak is married to actor Çağrı Çıtanak, who played Fırat in "Sen Çal Kapımı." Their relationship initially blossomed on set, and their engagement announcement in September 2022 was met with widespread excitement. The couple wed on October 8, and their celebration made headlines.
Humanitarian Efforts
In February 2023, southern Turkey and neighboring Syria were struck by a devastating earthquake. Başak pleaded with her followers for help in locating her mother, who resided in Hatay and was feared missing. With the assistance of her husband Çağrı, their mothers were eventually rescued and reunited with their families.
Current Projects and Recognition
Başak celebrated New Year's 2024 by announcing the release of her debut album. She expressed gratitude to her husband for supporting her dream and hoped for a successful year ahead.
In February 2024, she starred in the series "Kül Masalı," portraying the protagonist's first wife. On February 17, she received the Yildizlari Ayakli Gazete Award.
