Early Life and Stage Debut

Jean-Baptiste Nicolas Gouraud, known by the stage name Dugazon, was born to actor Pierre-Antoine Gouraud, or Dugazon-père. In 1770, Dugazon made his debut at the Comédie Française, quickly establishing himself as one of the foremost comic actors of his time.

Success and Social Recognition

Dugazon's performances captivated audiences, leading to his appointment as a member of the company's elite troupe known as sociétaires in 1772. He actively supported the French Revolution, later joining the newly established Théâtre de la République led by François-Joseph Talma.

Theater of the Revolution and Beyond

After the closure of the Théâtre de la République, Dugazon performed at the Théâtre Feydeau. With the reopening of the Comédie Française in 1799, he returned to its stage. In addition to his acting career, Dugazon served as a professor of declamation at the Paris Conservatory.

Later Years and Legacy

Dugazon retired from acting in 1807. As a playwright, he penned three comedies that were produced at the Théâtre de la République. In 1776, he married actress and dancer Louise-Rosalie Lefebvre. Their son, Gustave Dugazon, became a renowned composer.
