Early Career and Success
In June 2018, 18-year-old Mercy Cherono Chebet emerged victorious in the 5000-meter race at the Kenyan U20 National Championships. A month later, she made history by becoming the first Kenyan to win a title at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Athletics in Tampere, Finland.
Dominance in 2019
Chebet's success continued in 2019, as she claimed the gold medal at the World Cross Country Championships. She also triumphed at the Kenyan U20 National Cross Country Championships.
Breakthrough Season in 2022
2022 saw Chebet's breakthrough into the elite ranks of athletics. At the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, she secured a silver medal in the 5000m with a time of 14:46.75. She then clinched the African Championship title in Mauritius and added a gold medal in the 5000m at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Continued Success in 2023
Chebet maintained her impressive form in 2023. She won the bronze medal in the 5000m at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest with a time of 14:54.33. At the Diamond League Final in Oregon, she showcased her exceptional talent, clocking the third-fastest 5000m time in history (14:05.92), just behind the new world record set by Gudaf Tsegay (14:00.21).
Olympic Glory in 2024
The pinnacle of Chebet's career to date came at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. She captured the gold medal in the 5000m with a time of 14:28.56. Three days later, she added another gold to her tally, triumphing in the 10,000m with a time of 30:43.25, edging out Italian Nadia Battocletti by a mere 0.10 seconds.
