Early Life and Family
Rebecca Marie Gomez, known professionally as Becky G, was born on March 2, 1997, in Inglewood, California, to Alejandra and Francisco Gomez. Her grandparents hailed from the Mexican state of Jalisco, while her parents and most of her extended family were born in the United States. She was raised alongside two brothers and a younger sister. In December 2017, Gomez publicly revealed that she had a half-sister named Ember. The singer had learned of her sibling's existence when she was 13, but despite her efforts to connect, she had been unable to develop a relationship. "We've both taken steps to get closer, but it takes time to build bridges that have been broken for 18 years. Fairytales aren't written overnight," Rebecca wrote on her Instagram page on Ember's 18th birthday. Despite sharing the same last name, Rebecca and Selena Gomez are not related.
The Gomez family lived in poverty in the California city of Moreno Valley. When the young girl was 9 years old, her parents were forced to move the children into their grandparents' converted garage because they could no longer afford their rent. Rebecca's mind raced with thoughts of how she could provide for her family and where she could earn money. The entertainment industry became her calling.
Music and Film Beginnings
Gomez initially gained experience filming commercials and voicing animated shorts. In 2008, she appeared in the short film "El Tux" and the Discovery Channel movie "La estación de la Calle Olvera." Simultaneously, Rebecca pursued her musical interests, singing in the girl group G.L.A.M. and independently recording a music video for her debut single, "Jelly Bean," in 2009. To gain traction, she uploaded a cappella covers of popular songs to YouTube. Creating music provided her with an outlet to escape her reality.
Growing up, Gomez's musical influences were diverse, with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, Etta James, and The Temptations playing in her parents' "apartment." Her extended family gravitated towards traditional Mexican music styles such as ranchera and cumbia. This blend of sounds was reflected in Rebecca's own songwriting, and the young girl tirelessly auditioned for roles with her original songs. Her parents supported her endeavors, even if they occasionally couldn't afford to drive her to appointments due to a lack of gas money. Despite countless rejections, Rebecca's determination remained unyielding, and by the age of 13, she had taught herself to play the guitar.
Around the same time, Gomez collaborated with amateur duo The Jam on several covers, including Kanye West and Jay-Z's "Otis," Bad Meets Evil's "Lighters," Frank Ocean's "Novacane," Drake's "Take Care," Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend," and an original song titled "Turn the Music Up." These tracks were intended to be compiled into a mixtape, "@itsbeckygomez," but the project was never fully realized.
A video version of "Otis" caught the attention of producer Dr. Luke, who had previously worked with Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus. He was impressed by the young talent's versatility. Not only had Gomez's vocals caught his ear, but he also discovered that she could play guitar and write her own songs. Dr. Luke met with Gomez, had her perform, and subsequently offered her a contract with his label, Kemosabe Records.
In August 2011, Becky released her debut studio single, "Problem," a duet with Will.i.am, which became the soundtrack for the animated film "Hotel Transylvania" (2012). She then collaborated with Cody Simpson on "Wish U Were Here," and her track "Oath," recorded with Cher Lloyd, became her first Billboard Hot 100 entry, eventually earning Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.
Gomez, who had launched her career through covers, embraced her heritage with the 2013 single "Becky from the Block." The music video featured Jennifer Lopez, the originator of the song's original version, "Jenny from the Block." In July of that year, the singer released an EP titled "Play It Again," featuring five songs.
Becky's breakthrough came with the release of her single "Can't Get Enough" featuring rapper Pitbull. It topped the Latin Rhythm Airplay chart in the US and reached No. 1 on Billboard. The success allowed her to perform for the first time at the 2013 Premios Juventud ceremony.
Her 2014 single "Shower" entered the Billboard Hot 100 Top 20 and was certified multi-platinum, selling over 2 million copies. Subsequent songs failed to garner similar popularity, although 2015's "Lovin So Hard" gained attention as it featured Gomez's then-boyfriend, Austin Mahone.
Gomez has recorded numerous collaborations, including "Mayores" (pronounced "ma-yo-res") with Bad Bunny, "Sin Pijama" with Natti Natasha, and "Mad Love" with Sean Paul and David Guetta. Notably, she has yet to release a full-length studio album.
In 2017, Becky G fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming an actress. She appeared in two episodes of FOX's "Empire" and starred in the action-adventure film "Power Rangers" as the Yellow Ranger, Trini Kwan.
The role created a buzz around Gomez, as Trini was the first openly lesbian superhero in cinematic history. While filming, Becky continued to write music, collaborating with Argentine singer Axel on his track "Que Nos Animemos" and amassing material for her debut Spanish-language album.
Personal Life
Becky G believes that young age is no barrier to a vibrant personal life. In 2015, Austin Mahone confirmed his relationship with Rebecca on MTV, and in April 2016, it was officially announced that she was dating American professional soccer player Sebastian Lletget, a midfielder for the Los Angeles Galaxy. The couple is believed to still be together.
Since 2014, Becky G has been an official face of cosmetics company CoverGirl, with the contract requiring her to feature their products in her music videos. The actress could easily transition to modeling, as her appearance is undeniably model-like, as evidenced by her numerous bikini photos. However, Gomez's height falls below industry standards at 5 feet 1 inch (154 cm) and a weight of 106 pounds (48 kg).
Becky G Today
In August 2018, Becky G's filmography expanded with the release of the science fiction adventure film "A.X.L." (known as "Axel" in Russian distribution). The project received negative reviews from critics and performed poorly at the box office.
Gomez also voiced the animated feature film "Gnome Alone" (2017), which was originally intended for a worldwide release but ultimately premiered only in Latin America, Europe, and Asia.
In 2019, Rebecca is preparing to release her long-awaited debut Spanish-language album. According to the singer's social media updates, most of the material is already complete.
